Northern Light Cardiology introduces innovative treatment for condition that causes irregular heartbeats

June 18, 2025
Bangor, Maine (June 18, 2025) – The heart specialists at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center are happy to announce a new way to treat a heart condition called Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs), which causes irregular heartbeats. The team has successfully treated three patients so far using the cutting-edge method called Pulsed Field Energy (PFA).

Dr. Mohamed Shokr, electrophysiologist (a heart rhythm expert) at Northern Light Cardiology, said: “Pulsed Field Ablation is changing how we treat heart rhythm problems. It’s faster and safer for other heart rhythm issues. The tool’s unique shape helps us stop extra heartbeats from a small, moving part in the heart. This spot is tough to treat with older methods. I’m proud to bring better heart care to our community.”

Physicians on the team have found that PFA works well for patients with PVCs in hard-to-reach areas of the heart. Using a special basket-shaped tool, this method is able to fix the heartbeats in a spot that is usually difficult to treat with other methods.

Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is the first hospital in the U.S. to share results using this treatment as a top choice. The Cardiology team published their findings in the Heart Rhythm Case Reports Journal and presented at the Heart Rhythm Society Meeting in April 2025 in California. We’re proud to lead the way in offering advanced care to our community and beyond.
