Mix Maine Media to Acquire 100.3 WKIT from Rock Lobster Radio
November 05, 2025
Jay Hanson, Owner and President of Mix Maine Media, with radio stations in Augusta and Bangor, is excited to announce the purchase of Bangor’s top-rated radio station, 100.3 WKIT, Bangor’s Rock Station, from Rock Lobster Radio LLC.
Mix Media Maine will begin operating WKIT on November 1, 2025, per a Local Marketing Agreement, and expects FCC approval of the transaction in early 2026. Rock Lobster Radio purchased WKIT from author Stephen King and has been operating the station throughout 2025.
Much to listeners’ horror, Stephen King announced in November of 2024 that his longtime Bangor radio group Zone Corp. would shut down all three of its stations, WKIT 100.3 FM, WZLO 103.1 FM and WZON AM 620, at the end of that year.
Local business owners Greg Hawes and Jeff Solari formed Rock Lobster Radio and purchased the longtime local rock station from Mr. King.
Jay Hanson and Mix Media Maine bought the other two Zone Corp. stations in early 2025. WZLO has been operating this year at 103.1 FM and WZON will sign back on by the end of 2025.
Mix Maine Media President Jay Hanson on purchasing WKIT
“When an opportunity arises to enhance your position in a market you love, you move quickly. We couldn’t hesitate on a heritage station featuring legendary talent, on and off the air, as well as owners who are emotionally invested in the station’s future success. While Mix Maine Media is a multimedia company, we are local radio first because we know it delivers in markets like Bangor. Our passion for local radio, shared by WKIT’s present team, will continue to win for its listeners and advertisers.”

“When Greg and I heard that WKIT was going off the air we knew we had to do something to save the station. This past year has been amazing and we are pleased to say that we were able to save the station from going off the air and position it to be successful for years to come.”

The community support behind WKIT….
“We are honored and humbled by the support we received from the community after purchasing the station. While we are pleased to have been a part of WKIT’s storybook history, it was clear the best way to support the station was to step aside and hand the reigns over to an experienced local broadcaster owner who believes in the same live and local radio principles Stephen King had and we kept.”

The Rock Lobster Radio Legacy…
“We’re proud of what we have done for WKIT in our short amount of time with the station. We have moved the station to a beautiful new facility downtown with state of the art equipment upgrades. We retained the employees, kept the on air programming and the same including popular local contests all while racking up some of the highest ratings the station has seen.”
