Local Teen Launches “Hot Cocoa for a Cause” Fundraiser to Support Brewer Food Pantry Amid Rising Food Insecurity

Brewer, Maine – — As food insecurity continues to rise statewide—with Maine seeing an 18% increase in demand for pantry services over the past year—13-year-old Dorian “D-Max” Pillsbury is stepping up once again.
On Saturday, November 15, from 11 AM to 2 PM, D-Max will host “Hot Cocoa for a Cause” at Tiller & Rye in Brewer, serving cups of hot chocolate with all the toppings by donation to raise money for the Brewer Food Pantry. Each dollar donated will go directly toward keeping the pantry’s shelves stocked and lights on this winter.
This community fundraiser was sparked during the recent UpStart Maine Blitz Conference when Lisa Liberatore (D-Max’s mom, and Program Manager at UpStart Maine) and Tiller & Rye co-owner Sarah Marble Morneault connected during a panel on “Navigating Volatility in a Shifting Economy.” Their shared concern over rising food insecurity quickly turned into a plan: turn a cup of cocoa into a cup of hope.
“Dorian’s eyes lit up the moment we talked about teaming up with Tiller & Rye for a hot cocoa stand,” said Lisa Liberatore, Program Manager at UpStart Maine. “He loves hot chocolate almost as much as he loves helping others—and he’s already planning a toppings station to make sure every cup feels extra special.”
D-Max has raised thousands of dollars through past fundraisers—from lemonade and cereal drives to apple cider pop-ups—and has earned recognition as a young leader in the community. This latest effort is set to support one of Brewer’s most critical resources at a time of growing need.
“Hot Cocoa for a Cause” is open to the public, and all are encouraged to stop by, enjoy cocoa, share the event online, and support local families.
