Champion the Cure Challenge raises more than $750,000 for local cancer care

October 14, 2025
Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center’s annual Champion the Cure Challenge inspires hope for patients, families, and friends in Maine facing a cancer journey. This year, the Challenge brought 1,758 participants together to brighten the way for patients with cancer, honor loved ones, and lift up survivors. The events raised more than $750,000 through a walk, run, cycle, paddle, horse ride, or by virtual participation.

Established in 2009, founding sponsors Danny and Carla Lafayette and Lafayette Hotels have helped shaped the Challenge into one of Maine’s most inspiring and successful community fundraisers. Their longstanding commitment and partnership are instrumental in the event’s continued growth and its effect on advancing local cancer care.

“We’re grateful to every single person who participates, volunteers, and donates, helping ensure our friends and neighbors receive world-class cancer care right here at home.” says Cynthia Faulkner, president, Northern Light Health Foundation.  “That’s what it’s all about—coming together to take care of each other.”

In the past 16 years, community support for The Challenge has grown, helping raise $8.7 million to date—funds which enhance cancer research, ensure hair preservation is available for patients receiving chemotherapy, help purchase a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for patients in need of radiation therapy, as well as provide liquid nutrition, treatment planning software, and support staff for genetic counseling and patient navigation.

The 2026 flagship event, featuring a Walk/Run/Cycle will take place on Saturday, August 15, followed by a Motorcycle Ride and Car Show on Sunday, August 16, and Paddle on Saturday, September 12.
