Annual Adopt-A-Garden Big Dig Event in Downtown Bangor, Saturday May 16th

May 13, 2026

Bangor, Maine – The Downtown Bangor Partnership Beautification Committee and the Adopt-a-Garden program are excited to host the Annual Big Dig event on Saturday, May 16th from 9am to 12pm, for the 12th consecutive year.

The event kicks off a week of planting and beautification Downtown, during which individuals, families, businesses, and groups of all sizes adopt and plant garden spaces and become involved with the Downtown community through beautification of our shared spaces. This year, over 100 sites have been adopted. The committee expects more than 200 volunteers working to plant flowers, deliver soil and mulch, water, and make Downtown even more beautiful.

Since 2014 Downtown Bangor has played host to hundreds of adopt-a-gardeners transforming parks, tree pits and hardscapes into micro-oases, reflective of the distinctive personalities and perspectives of Greater Bangor’s individuals, businesses and organizations. The Adopt-A-Garden program, which started with 40 plots, has gained momentum over the years, becoming a symbol of community spirit and a visual representation of the notion that downtown belongs to everybody.

Participants choose a space downtown and design, plant, and maintain a garden in that space for that season. Volunteers are responsible for purchasing flowers and caring for their adopted space throughout the growing season. For individuals, groups, or businesses who wish to help but cannot commit for the season, donations and volunteers are also accepted.
